WHAT IS ACNE?
Acne is commonly caused by changes in the pilosebaceous units. Acne on forehead, chest, back and neck is caused by skin structures containing hair follicles due to androgen simulation from its associated sebaceous gland. It is mostly characterized by non inflammatory follicular papules or comedones and in its severe form it is characterized by inflammatory papules. It affects that area of the skin that are densely populated by the sebaceous follicles. Pimples, blemishes, spots and zits are common names for acne lesions.

The upper arms can also contain acne but the lesions present there are keratosis pilaris. Acne lesions are nothing but comedones, inflammatory pastules, pustules etc. The large modules are called cysts and nodulocystic is a term that is used to refer inflammatory acne in its severe form.

CAUSES OF ACNE
Some people consider it to be hereditary, but the real cause of acne on forehead or elsewhere is yet to be determined. Many of us consider the following is the cause for acne:

Genetically speaking, school-age boys with acne often come from families where the acne problem is prevalent. The cause is an earlier occurrence of acne and thus continues to run in the family. During puberty, the male sex hormones run rampant and this results in the enlargement of the follicular glands and acne forms. So, hormonal activities also result in acne. Inflammation caused by skin irritation and constant scratching may lead to acne. Stress from increased hormonal output from the adrenal gland and the hyperactive sebaceous gland causes acne. Acne is also caused from the accumulation of dead skin cells and bacteria residing on the pores. Other causes of acne formation are usage of anabolic steroids, medication containing lithium, barbiturates, etc. Severe exposure to chemical compounds like chlorinated dioxins causes Chloracne or exposure to halogens result in Halogen acne. Also use of amphetamines causes acne.

TREATMENT FOR ACNE
There are people who have dry skin. If you are one of them then I consider you should see what makes your skin dry. It may be your facial cleanser. For, you may be using one that is suited for a person having an oily skin. But I suggest that you use something that is mild and avoid the use of soaps and creams containing peroxides. Some people think that usage of moisturizers worsens the condition. But dermatologists suggest the use of moisturizer. But if you have dry skin, use gel instead of lotions and creams as the latter may worsen your condition as it is greasy. Also the moisturizer should be non –comedogenic in order to avoid clogging of pores thereby preventing skin flaking and peeling. Dry skin results from dehydration. During acne on forehead or elsewhere you should drink plenty of water to flush out the toxins present in your cells. Some acne treatment may include some harmful chemicals which can worsen your condition rather than helping it. So, dermatologists suggest that you should leave your skin alone for a while and stop using these treatments for a while
